Engine 0-rings

    My 92 corolla still burns oil after all the treatments but a lot less. Which is something to be thankful for. But i would like to completley stop the burning of oil a lot of people speak of replacing the 0-rings and I am not sure the location of them and what to actually do and weather or not it will stop the problem. ANY input welcome!

    O-rings if it is LEAKING oil - o-rings are everywhere on an engine.

    But if it's burning oil, then it's either valve stem seals or piston rings (probably valve stem seals unless the engine has not been well cared for).

    Valve stem seals are in the head and maintain tension on the valve stems to keep oil from dripping down into the intake port (or the exhaust port).

    Piston rings are located in grooves on the top of the piston - there are like 3 per piston (maybe 2, can't remember). One (or two) are compression rings, the other is an oil control ring.

    Generally, an engine shouldn't burn more than 1 quart per 1500 miles - ALL engines burn some oil...it's unavoidable.

    Also....this just came to me...get your PCV system checked (don't know if there is a PCV valve on your engine or not - if there is, then replace it for $5). It allows the blow-by pressure to equalize with atmospheric pressure. If it's stopped up somewhere or not working, you'll end up with a lot of pressure inside the crankcase, which will force oil by the seals and rings and increase oil consumption.
