Just re-grounded engine....

I just did the engine re-ground mod. I used 4 AWG copper speaker wire and added some ground points that weren't there before. It was a fun mod - had to get creative more than once. Anyhow - I drove the car and so far can't tell any difference at all. Maybe that'll change after the computer re-learns everything. Maybe not.

The only thing it does is make the car start easier and not have that stupid idle searching thing. It is not a power gaining mod although it might get 2-3HP, maybe.

i felt nothing on the top end, but ill swear to my death that it fattend up the low to mid reange torque.

they run form the battery to the frame, battery to tranny, tranny to head, head to head, head to frame.

You will gain some HP back but not gain like adding a turbocharger. Adding that to an old car like a S13 would be a waste :roll:

$30 for more electrical efficacy is far from a waste...

Grounding Kits are USELESS. How many times do I have to tell you that. They are USELESS. They are USELESS. They are USELESS USELESS USELESS.

We install a LOT of these in the shop that I work for.. I refuse to tell the customers that they are useless but oh well it's their money. I have tested the cars and NONE of them produced better results.

So if YOU still want one of these, go ahead. Oh by the way, I have a magic cable over here that will instantly give you 50 HP. I am more than happy to sell it to everyone. We can even set up a group buy....

So, just because it doesn't give an instant 50hp, it's useless?? Odd. Never thought of it that way. Think I should remove my kit and take it back and demand a refund because I didn't get the advertised 50hp boost?? Is there something WRONG with adding some more conductive, higher quality ground wires to the engine and frame?

As I recall, I also stated that I had reset the computer while doing the re-grounding which WILL affect power output until the computer re-establishes the long-term learned values, which takes about 40 drive cycles to complete. Now that I've opened the exhaust up with the Magnaflow muffler and res-back 2.25" pipe along with a CAI, I expected to LOOSE some low-end power (this is dyno proven on other cars). Guess what? I've gained some in the low end after driving around a bit. Explain that.

Well said Trav. The results are undeniable. Upgrading the stock flimsy ground setup is affordable and highly beneficial in improving a crucial operating system.

Efficiency = Power(OUT)/Power(IN). Common sense says it's a direct relationship b/w power output and efficiency. Increasing efficiency increases power out. Increasing power out increases efficiency, assuming power in is constant.

Didn't mean to be vague, b/c I was using the two interchangeably, perhaps incorrectly so.

My friend said they are crap too. He worked at a dealership for like 4 years doing repair work then worked on the line in michigan building cars. He knows more about cars than anyone I've ever known. Thats the reason I never bought a grounding kit. What he says goes, haha

we "argue" the merrits of various wires in the HT world all the time, there are camps of folks that believe wire is wire, and those that "believe in" the high priced stuff (upwards of $1k for a meter of cable...) i fall somewhere in between. my new ht will have somewhere in the neighborhood of 500-900 total in cabling, more than many spend on an "HT system", but it works for me.

on this ground wire matter, its a dirt cheap mod that may have some positive benifit. why not do it and see for yourself? this is like the A/C insulation. too cheap not to give it a try.

would i pay a couple hundred bucks for a ground mod? no. ... but for 20-40 bucks, why not?

I have several amps that are drawing 150 amps total from my poor little altinator and I've noticed my lights dim and I've blown a couple of lights (maybe because of the power fluctuation). I guy from an audio shopthought that since a twofarad cap did little that perhaps it might be a grounding issue. He did say 'perhaps' but after reading this thread I wondered if others have had an improvement in this area once they re-grounded...

If a wire isn't appropriate for the amount of current flowing through, the resistance goes up.

Take a lightning strike for example.

The high voltages involved don't see a 22AWG wire the same as they see a very fat ground rod.

When the strike hits your house, it 'ignores' the house wiring because of how high the resistance is to the great voltage...it sees the ground rod as a very low path of resistance ot the voltage and preferentially follows that.

Very short spikes of voltage, transients, act this way as well. They don't see wire in the same way that conventional voltages see it. A transient voltage, say from your spark plug, is going to see a thin gauge wire as a path of high resistance. It is a very high voltage for a very short time.

I've read that the ideal solution for high transient voltages is a conductor with a very large surface area. Apparently, the surface area is the main determination of how the transient voltages see the paths resistance.

I use this : http://www.bb-elec.com/product.asp?sku=CU15B to provide lightning a path away from equipment for installations. For lengths under a few (three) feet, a very thick gauge wire can be substituted...so, I imagine the ground kits available are doing something to reduce resistance to ground.

I can picture a more elaborate and effective ground system being a good idea...it seems like it makes sense, I can't see that it would hurt anything...

And if there is evidence that reducing the path resistance actually improves an engines performance...

Those eBay kits are cute, but once the dissimliar metals begin corroding on each other, how good of a connection are you going to have?

I'd say use some grease to prevent oxidation. They sell something called Ox-Gard for aluminum electrical connections.
