hey i've got a 98 non-VVTi corolla and am wondering what new cams I should get for the car, or whether I should try to find a VVTi head so I can up the power just a tad, also just outta curiosity when does VVTi kick in on the 1ZZ-FE? I test drove a new corolla XRS and the VVTi kicks in between 7-8000 RPM, which is kinda dissapointing, what about the 1ZZFE??

your wasting your money....getting a new head which is a pretty penny just for five more ponies...eh and as far as cams there aint shit for ours..and dont even bother fukin around with the cam gears them shits as light as it gets. I say u want power work on the internals...the boost...but for some added power get an intake and a catback system and maybe pulleys...dont bother wasting money on a vvti head..

you can feel a slight change in acceleration in a VVT in the 98s, right around 3000 rpms

that power change is all in your head...i have an 00 and the powerband is the same no change...

contact el prototypes they regrind 98-99 1zzfe cams. The gains are ok. Ive herd some guy with a regrind,intake,exhaust and some porting peaked at 150 hp.

vvt-i doesn't kick in. it gradually alters the duration of the valves throughout your entire band. it's basically technology that makes your car gradually switch from economy to performance and back. What 4age is referring to is when your motor levels its torque gain . Go look at a dyno, and you'll see the sweet spot. Compare the Hp with the Torq curve

I think on the old forums someone said vvt-i kicked in at 800 rpm so yeah... basically it's on all the time when you're moving.

Getting the newer head won't do jack. The only difference between 98-99 and 00+ is that the 00+ had a vvti actuator on the intake side of the cams. Even if you swapped heads, its just the same as the one you already have. The vvti is pointless. The non vvti I think has more potential. It is more "tuneable" if you know what I mean. The rollas with vvti are stuck with it and can't have aftermarket cams period. At least with the non-vvti, we can advance or retard the timing to our liking(to a certain limited degree ) Plus I think the old valve cover looks more bitchin!!! Too bad the TRD supercharger doesn't work on the 98-99 1zz anyway. (I'm currently designing a custom supercharger kit/won't tell until its ready.) Overall, the power outputs of both generations are about the same with a 5 hp difference. Big whoop.

VVTi is VVT w/ intelligence. So its better. You can turbo both or whatever. No diff. VVTi is on all the time. TQ band is TQ you can see. Same engine. Little oil-actuated gear on the in cam.

So if you have 98-99 you can adj. your cams via adj. cams. 00+ you can do your ex cam only.

Okay, is this 150 hp to the wheels or at the crank? And 400 bucks for a regrind? Fuck that. You can almost get pistons with that money.

i have contacted el about this a month ago and they said it would run around 400 bucks to do a regrind. this includes all materials. it takes about a week in house according to them. but we know how those weeks turn to.........never mind, you know what i mean.

isn't the XRS redline 7,800? The vvti doesn't "kick" in like everyone is explaning. What your feeling is the right spot in the powerband. 2zz has lots of top end and thats what your feeling.

1zz has bottom end at least on the corolla. Thats why my friends integra can out run me in the top end. But in drag we get about the same time. minus .1 second.

You never know and ive had it on autos, which is slightly different but still.
