(?) Automatic on the dyno (?)

I know with a stick tranny they go up to the gear with the closest to 1:1 ratio, how is this done in automatics?

I ask because there will be a dyno day at the local shop and id want to see how low my car numbers can go... LOL

Usually, they stick it in 3rd gear in an auto (turn O/D off on cars with overdrive, leave it in Drive in 3-speed autos). They run the dyno up to at least 45-55MPH, that way - when you punch the gas, the car will not be tempted to downshift into 2nd.

Some places will hook a diagnostic tool into the car to lock the transmission in a particular gear - doesn't work with all cars, but pretty common with the Mustang, Camaro/Firebird, and Corvette auto transmissioned guys.

lol, if your enthusiast enough, but really if you haven't put any work in the engine don't dyno it...

Some places will disconnect the kickdown cable - so the car does not drop into a lower gear - depends on the shop and the dyno setup. Some will roll into the run, so your lower numbers will be messed up but be OK for a majority of the run.

As for doing the dyno or not - completely up to you. On the plus side - you will get a good baseline for your car, get introduced to the dyno process, and might learn a few things along the way. Plus, dynos are much more than absolute numbers - their real value lies in measuring relative changes from modifications to the engine/powertrain.

Thanks fishexpo101. Im still 50/50. If I will do it I would do it for the experience and to know my numbers. As for modding, if I would do some modding, it would probably be a swap first. Im still very curious about what whp I am making.:rolleyes:

    I confirmed that I downshift @ 55mph and does not @ 60mph.
