    wrong....

vvti is variable valve timing on the intake cam, dual vvti is variable valve timing on both intake and exhaust cams. ivtec is analogous to vvtl-i. honda doesn't really have an equivalent to vvti.

It's not Dual vvti it's VVTI-L varible vavle timing with Intelligence and Lift. they only make it in the 2zz engine, the altezza or IS300 only has VVT I. Currently only the celica GT S and Corolla/Matrix XRS have VVTI L

negative. if you read the above posts, dual vvt-i is where both intake and exhaust cams are equipped with vvt-i. on the 1zz-fe motor, only the intake cam has vvt-i.

you are referring to vvtl-i, not vvti-l. however, you are correct that it also incorporates lift.

i have to correct jspitz, there is a such thing as a dohc vvt-i in a corolla and i know that for a fact because i am a toyota mechanic, and yes the dohc vvt-i would fit in an older corolla you may just have to change the mounts. The dohc vvti and the dohc vvtli motors are actually stronger than the vtec honda motor, the vvti motor when mod. correctly can put out 190bhp without turbo or supercharger, the vvtl-i can actually put out 205-210bhp when mod. correctly without turbo or supercharger also.

for older corollas, like the ae92 or ae101, a nice engine would be the 4AGE silvertop or blacktop engines...

for ae101's, the silvertop is a bolt on... no modifications in mounting...

hey dtownrolla if you do a racing header, full exhaust from header back and use a full cold air intake you will come up with 190 for the vvt-i motor

    Huh?!

With the supercharged 1ZZ-FE, you're looking at around 180 crank hp. How would just intake and exhaust net a 60-70hp gain on the 1ZZ??? I'd rather think that FI or nitrous would be required for that kind of gains.

i hope you're not talking about the 1zz-fe vvt-i motor, i dont think those kinds of numbers are feasible at all with bolt ons and no engine management. why? because i dont think a race header will give me 50 more hp and i have the other mods you listed.

I am just going to stray off the topic a little bit. What is the difference between the '02 celica engine and the '02 corolla engine. Why such a difference in hp numbers.

exactly the same engine mechanically, except for the intake and exhaust manifolds. ECUs are also different, reflecting a more aggressive fuel and timing curve. The rev limiter is also raised to 6500. these all play a part in the 140hp number on the celica, but that is mainly due to HP being a linear function of RPM, and the celica simply revs higher than the corolla.

Or there's the possibility that Toyota has under-stated the Corolla's hp/tq. numbers for marketing purposes. On my '03 Corolla, I dyno'ed before the s/c'er and after the s/c'er. Before the s/c'er was installed, I dynoed 122 WHP and 115 ft-lbs. Being a 5-spd, if we say a 15% loss through the drivetrain, then that would put me at around 143 crank hp, and 135 crank ft-lbs. Now, this was with NO MODS other than a magnaflow muffler, a stainless-steel oil filter. Everything else was 100% OEM. After the s/c'er (which advertises 166hp and 145ft-lbs @ the crank), I laid down 160hp and 150 ft-lbs TO THE WHEELS. Again, stock intake and no other supporting mods other than the muffler and oil filter. That would mean I was around 173crank hp and 170ft-lbs at the crank. SAE correction made a difference of around 2hp and 2ft-lbs. The engine just simply does much better than Toyota and TRD advertise in terms of power.
