Short Ram Air with VVT-i

Is having a Weapon R short air intake with the VVT-i anything like V tech in the hondas. How do you think the weapon R would sound with that set up, I know this is an obvious question to some but to most like myself it is not! thanks for anything

its not as loud, i got a weapon r on mine and my friend has a civic and his is aloud louder. His short ram intake is actually longer then mine buy alot thats y its louder. But vtec is probably gonna be louder

Dunno about Weapon R. but if it's just short RAM. My friend has one on his B18, and it's very loud already on low rev. In my 01 rolla (injen) , not so loud on low rev but very loud on high rev.

you could just record a shitvic at full throttle and then play that out of a loudspeaker under the hood, beats the HP loss of a short ram intake..

just go with a cold air intake.. its just worth it.. and why are you so worried about the sound.. if my car was fast as hell, i don't care what it sounds like...

all intake sound the same...its all in the engine,whether its high compression or low compression.

sri = hp loss, not with mine so I disagree...weapon-r makes a hiss sound but its hard to hear cuz my exhaust is so loud. I don't like CAI ever since my brother waterlocked his rsx with one.

i made 2.1more peak hp but lost a ton of midrange and low-range power.. making it POINTLESS..

the closest dyno is probably all the way to nyc, screw that, so my proof is the track, i beat cars that i couldnt stock. besides we have different cars and most likely different SRIs, and look where i live, i dont really have to worry about heat soak.

he didn't have a bypass valve...
If he did then it wouldn't have hydro locked his engine

you beat cars that you couldn't, stock? by what, .0001 seconds? you think that 2hp makes THAT much difference at the track? so you raced them the same night with and without the intake?

i agree.... i'm switching back to my stock air box with the k&amp;n filter....

Yes a short ram will make your car louder... If you want loud you can add an exhaust too..

I have had the Apexi power intake for a while now. And Tamago is right about the short ram. I have a custom intake which sits behind/under driver side headlight. I switched it to short ram and back to behind the headlight...

When it was a short ram it had better response off the line, louder and killed top end... Then I switched it to my cold air(behind/under headlight), off the line suffered a little bit but from a roll and top end the car does pull better. Also the short ram suffered from heat soak in traffic jams, something the cold air does not.

I have switched them and kept different setups for a month or 2 and kept switching back and forth. I stuck with the custom cold air option... I have no dyn's to prove anything but the CAI was better...

Also the airbox restriction and engine size also do matter... Cars with a very restrictive airbox and bigger displacement(eg V8's) see more gains...

so what i gather from all this, the best thing to do is to leave the stock airbox and modify the stock piping that leads to the box, so it resembles a CAI and change the filter?

Welllllll I actually have a custom CAI(used Celica GTS CAI, cut and modified it to fit)... The thing is a short ram is, it will give you some gain but not all that much... Especially if that is your only mod... The more mods you have, the better they work.

If you notice any turbo setup, majority will actually run short ram setup (also due to limited space to work with and IC piping running near firewall)...

i rather have a CAI but ill be too nervious cuz of what happened to my brother. Perhaps I could make my own heat shield. Do you have pics of your engine bay cuz i would like to see your CAI?

This is all not to mention how inaccurate MAF sensor readings become when you introduce lots of turbulence and intake noise to it. MAF sensors hate that.

how would one go about changing the stock air box is there a thread about that already?

I guess by lag I was referring to the car being bogging down off the line... Since there is a big gaping hole where the air is being sucked from...

I guess easier to explain if for example you had a short ram on 2 cars... One with a normal sized filter... And one with an oversized filter... Wouldn't the oversized filter cause the car to bog down?

i suppose there could be a slight bog.. but the car pretty much bogs as it is.. i dunno.. i chopped the bottom off my airbox on the current egg, and didn't really pick up any gains.. honestly (and very humorous) i did it so i could hear the engine.. i was having a problem with bouncing off the rev limiter, it's a pain.. all good tho, i didn't use MY airbox, got one on ebay for $5

here's how..

remove all sensors from top of airbox. maf sensor requires a phillips screwdriver, um, not sure about the other one, i think it just plugs into the box, probably bolted with a 10mm.
remove top cover of airbox. use 10mm or phillips screwdriver to loosen the clamp around the hose and the throttle body.

then remove the filter panel, down below you'll see 3 (i think) 10MM bolts. remove those. you can now pull the airbox free. from there, it's just a matter of pulling off the stock tubing.. there's a resonator box in the fender, if you don't care about it, leave it there.. otherwise you'll have to pull off your drivers side front wheel and unbolt the fenderwell liner.. (some remove the bumper, more of a PITA in my opinion.)

Question about the MAF sensor. I'm trying to mod a SRI into CAI for my 01. All I need is chop the SRI and add some 90' silicone hose/steel/plasic pipe to lead it to the fender area.
Here is my question:
Does it matter if the MAF sensor is setting close or far away from the the tb? Does it has to be on the destinated location let's say 6" away from the tb?

MAF sensors wig out when they are subjected to lots of intake noise. So, in general, you want the MAF sensore as FAR away from the TB as possible.
