It wasn't anything phenominal during its day, the 4 cylinder was a dog and the 6 cylinder was nothing special performance wise although they were all rear wheel drive and they handled pretty well. It's main distinguishing feature was the mid engine layout and plastic body panels. I like the styling of the notchback versions and I really like the fact that a decent running specimen can be picked up for about $1000 or so, but the one big reason I want one is that just about any chevy engine can(and has) been swapped in, an LS1 fiero holds a certain appeal for me  . Just good, cheap fun.

The LS1 is just my personal preference. The really popular engines for swapping are the northstar, LT1, and 3800sc from the grand prix gtp. All of them certainly much cheaper than than an LS1 (especially if they are used) and can all lay down some serious power.
