    100 watt light question

    Hello all,
I was thinking about getting on of those light upgrade harnesses, but first I was just wondering if any of you running 100 watt bulbs have had any trouble with the factory light housings getting too hot and melting or any other abnormal effects.

    Thanks

I have. It ruins your DRL relay. thats about a $350 peice. I had to put all my stock bu;bs back in and take it in and pretend like "i dont know why it would do that". it took them over 5 hours to find the problem. then they had to order the part.

If you run any higher than normal watt bulbs you need a relay kit of some sort. Dont push your luck. Mine ran for about 3 weeks fine then just blew one day. Acvtully it blew at night. it was cloudy and pitch black. PLUS when that relay goes you lose EVERY SINGLE light on your car. Taillights, headlights, fog lights signal lights. they all run through that relay!!!

So if I get the harness I should not have any problems with heat running 100 watt bulbs for the highs? Correct.

Now the next question, if I use 80 watt bulbs for the lows how long should they last because of the DRLs? I do like the DRLs so I do want to keep them. Am I better off sticking with OEM or SilverStars for the lows?

    thanks

Yes you should not have any problems. It will be like any factory lights, probably burns out within... 1/2 - 1 year time?

I am using 100W with DRLs all the time, everyday of the week, every minute my car is on. And I drive a hella lot. About 100Km/day average, sometimes more on weekends. And its been working totally fine, and I checked the bulbs, no increase or deforming of the light itself either.

Lets just say... the effects are all photoshopped. lol!

So how true can it be? Why do they need to boast themselves?

I can get you better bulbs for 25$/pair shipped. 100W ones too.

But you need to get the harness upgrade, if not from me, from someone else so you dont burn your harness.

With the stock bulbs and the stock wiring harness, the voltage the bulbs see when running in DRL mode is lower than in normal mode. When the voltage accross a light bulb is reduced its life is significantly increased. A 10% drop in voltage will typically increase bulb life by 10 times. I've got a '95 Corolla with 190,00km on it and it still has the original headlights.

With the upgrade harness, you're bulbs will always run at full brightness whether you're in DRL mode or normal mode. They will also get a higher voltage than they would with the stock harness. The result is a much shorter expected bulb life. If your concern is bulb life, stick to the stock harness and just use 50W bulbs.

If you decide to use the upgrade harness do yourself (and your insurnace company) a big favour and put a fuse in line with the power wire as close to the battery as possible. Although unlikely, it could be a fire waiting to happen without the fuse, and your insurance company would likely reject the claim.

If you had a fire in the engine bay you would have a hard time finding the harness anyway.

Anyway. Those bulbs on Ebay you asked about are one of the best. they are 100W that "look like" 150W, and 80W that "look like" 110w. Those are the ones I used on my car that burnt out the relay. So you will deff need the harness kit for those.

I had 3 sets of those though and they burnt out after about 1 - 2 months driving. I put 2,500 km on my car a month though, so they were good fro about 5,000 km.

And I used a relay harness as well. I didnt use Jae's because I built my own almost 1 year ago. I recomend if you do upgrade though you will want to take your drl's down. or be buying bulbs every other month.
