    Re: 12V Sub Wire Grommet

My friend and I ran two 2 ga wires through the factory grommet in his 2004 Corolla. It's located on the firewall on the driver's side. It's the same grommet the main factory harness is routed through. It's best to have a friend push the wire from under the hood and carefully cut the grommet from the inside where you see the wire pushing against the rubber. This grommet is double layered so it can be a pain to get to. Be careful not to cut any of the wires located in the factory harness!
Once you push the wire through, spraying the wire with WD-40 really helps the wire slide through the rubber grommet.

i did the same except just pulled it out, slipped the wire through, then stuffed it back in as tight as possible....u dont need to run int thru the firewall tho...try mayb running the wire to the drivers side thru the door hinge..this IMO is a better option than messing with the firewall

i tried running mine through the grommet in the firewall and had a hell of a time of getting it through both sides of the grommet. I have it going through the side of the grommet with the grommet pushed to the side. I've tried to fix it but i ran short of time and had no luck so its stuck like that.. It causes a little engine noise, which i've gotten used to.. If you have experience and proper tools it might not be too bad.. unfortunately i was doing my installation in the garage at night by myself, and by the time i got to that it was like midnight and I gave up.. You might try running it through the door hinge or whatever the other guy said because the grommet is thick and has two sides.. plus its a painintheass to position yourself so that you can push the wire through.. Two people will help a lot though.

    I'd suggest this:

    topic 1194

Also, don't use WD-40 or any other petroleum based lubricant on wire insulation, it will cause the insulation to crack over time.

This is not accurate. It would kinda suck making an automotive product like wire be sensitive to petroleum products.

BTW, WD-40 is a solvent.

Insulation on most automoive wire is PVC based which is resistant to oils. http://www.mrotoday.com/mro/archives/Safety/glovetipsFM2000.htm

This would be incredibly ghetto and a possible fire hazzard.

That is not the source of your noise my friend. Could be a possible fire hazzard though! :p

We will be installing two amplifiers, subwoofer as well as upgrading all ground wires under the hood over the long weekend in this same Corolla. I will be taking pictures of the installation as we go. I will make sure I take pictures of the wiring routed through the firwall.

Then I will leave it to you to write a letter to Toyota to ask them why the paint, suspension bushings, C.V. joint boots, engine mounts, etc. they use are all sensitive to petroleum based products.

If you use it as a lubricant, then I'll call it a lubricant. If you want to be pedantic, that's your perogative.

This link talks about gloves, which are usually only worn for relatively short periods of time. The simple fact is that over a period of one or two years the insulation will get brittle and crack (and gloves will too).

I'm just trying to look out for the members of this board. I've seen a lot of people giving a lot of bad advice over the past several months. I don't think it's malicious, it's just a case of people knowing just enough to be dangerous.

The grommet is pushed slightly to the side allowing the power wire to fit through.. thus making a small opening for air to come through.. This would be where the little bit of extra engine noise comes in, I noticed it right after installing my system (It has nothing to do with noise from the speakers, i'm assuming you thought i was getting engine whine or something)...I'm not too worried about the fire hazard because its very small hole and its on the opposite side of the engine... I'm sure it is more of a risk though but my car has 11,000 miles on it.. And its really cool how you repeat yourself... Its not like i told the guy to do it like i did, i was just telling him what a pain it is to push it through that small ass grommet.. obviously some other people have realized there is a better place to push the power wire through and they gave good suggestions instead of bashing on me.. Eventually i will get around to runnign it through correctly but in the meantime i'll just be ghettohazardous.

At least you had the common sense not to cut into the wiring harness grommet. I'd hate to think what it would cost to replace that. It's also nice to see that someone else knows how to spell hazard...
