2006 Jetta GLI announced by VW

We’ve been waiting for the GLI to be added to the Jetta lineup ever since VW’s most important model was redesigned this year. The Jetta accounts for 40% of VW’s sales in the U.S., so the addition of the GLI and its 2.0L turbo four-cylinder with FSI direct injection that produces 200 hp is huge news and will hopefully give sales of the new Jetta a shot in the arm. With its six-speed manual the GLI will reach 60 mph in 6.7 seconds. Better news is the availability of the oh-so-sweet DSG six-speed transmission. Different styling cues including a black honeycomb grille, GLI badging, and large 18-inch alloy wheels that look like they’re sourced from company-owned Lamborghini differentiate the new GLI from standard Jetta fare. This will be the top of the line Jetta as there are no plans to drop in a detuned version of the VR6 available in the new Passat or the new R32 motor. Pricing was not announced, but we expect it to be in the mid-$20K range.

More quality pics from VW after the jump.

I dont see VW going downhill, just because ya dont like their bodystyle.

I hated the new corolla bodystyle, but doesnt mean I thought they were going downhill.
