How hard is it to install speakers?

For the front doors, I recently had them replaced, but one of the front speakers turned out to be defective.

    I have a 1997 7th gen Corolla.

How long should it take to do this by myself?

if you get the correct size, not long at all.. just remove the door panel and it's a screw off, wire screw on process. Not sure if you have 4" or 5.25" up front.. I had 4" in my 96

Do I need a special tool or anything to remove the panels?

I really don't want to risk breaking anything.

Will a Haynes manual be any help?

the haynes manual is pretty useless for interior panels..
special tools, not really..you could grab a panel puller if u want but it isn't necssary. Ad if you have hand crank widow, it'll be best to get a crank remover.

    but basically.
    1) pop out the control panels with a small flat head. Or remove window crank
    2) disconnect the harnesses from the switches
    3) remove the triangle plastic trim opposit the side view mirror
    4) unscrew (phillips head X1) the pull door handle. push the door handle towards the front of the car and pull outwards. then disconnect the tab to the actuator rod.
    5) pop out the door handle and unscrew (phillips head x2) the screws under the handle.
    6) grab the entire door panel from the side and pull out.. the entire panel is held on using plastic compression "pop clips."
    7) now you can unscrew the speakers.

I think there are instructions on crutchfields.com as well.
