I test drove the original prius once. It felt like the engine only had 2 speeds.
Idle... and full power, nothing inbetween. I remember pulling off the line with electric only and cars were honking behind me to go faster but I already had it floored.

The 2nd gen. is suppose to be better... and a hybrid can also give you more performance with the same gas mileage (as in the RX400h)...

I had a guy at work tell me that his Prius would smoke my 01 Corolla and I just said "Any time, any place". He was completely serious too. He seems to think since they have that planetary gear box shit where the car doesn't really shift that would keep his speed up and take me. Then he started rattling off about how he raced a prelude and won. Something tells me the prelude wasn't racing :)

the first gen does not take off compared to the second gen i drove a 05 demo and that sucker actually took off pretty well. i think it has close to 300 lb ft of torque combined.

I've actually been beaten by one before (2nd gen) going over a mountain pass. I was holding the corolla in 5th gear so I got about 20mpg during the hill climb.. where as he was flooring it and burning up all his battery too. He had enough power left to pass me going 5 mph faster maybe. About 7/8 the way up the pass all the sudden I'm like, hey!, I'm starting to catch up! (His batteries ran out of juice :haha: ) then nearing the top I've caught up and I go flying past him still in 5th lol

The gas engine is 76hp/82lb/ft. The electric motor is 67hp/295lb/ft. The net output is 110hp. -from the toyota website.

I was thinking about getting one if it were cost effective, but right now it's not.
They aren't bad looking cars, if it were cheaper I may consider buying one. I would have to pay $180 more per month to own one. Half the gas as the corolla though.

I just don't want one because I've never met a battery that didn't need to be replaced fairly often and I doubt the prius battery is much different since it takes a constant abusive charge and discharge and I dont want to know how much Toyota sticks ya for a replacement.

As for the prius getting 2 times the corolla's mileage I think that is a best case scenario (battery fully charged, flat ground, etc). Also that assuming your not going to be flooring it everywhere which you know you will to make up for all the lost power hehe. Anyways I wouldn't bring the fuel economy into it unless you plan to drive the prius like a granny and your commutes are on flat ground ;) Does the prius weight a **** load too cause of the battery and extra ****?

hey down here its flat as hell! so it would do us some good.
Plus the Prius uses Nickel Cadmium or Nickel Metal Hydride batteries i for got which ones but both are pretty good and last for a while. i think its NM-H.
