Went to a Nascar race today...

A friend is in the Coast Guard, so they sponsord a tent for a bunch of people to come out and see the Coast Guard car in the Busch series race today at ATL Motor Speedway. It was a lot of fun! The cars are 10x faster in person than on the screen, not to mention louder than just about anything you've ever heard before.

I have a newfound respect for those cars and the drivers, because it doesn't look easy to take those curves at 180+ MPH. So many times it looked like they shold have slammed into the wall, but those things just stuck to the track. I've never been a fan of the Nascar hype and the culture that surrounds it sometimes, but I'm really a fan of any type of racing, so I enjoyed the experience. We had pit passes and the whole deal, so we were right up on the cars. We were at the track since about 9am eating and hangin out, so when we left about 45 mins into the race, the Coast Guard car had just assumed 1st place. I woke up a little while ago to hear that the Coast Guard car won, so that's pretty cool.

Agreed. Nascar / Busch Series / Craftsman Truck is awesome. Watching it on TV is a different story. I love going to the Busch races down at PPIR.

Glad you had a good time!

there's no way Mike could get me to sit through a full race on Sunday if he's watching it on TV - but i have no issue whatsoever if he can get us tickets to a race.

besides, next season's going to have a Camry in it. ;)

i've been to a formula 1 race in indiana... now that shit is crazy... u literaly need ear plugs when they pass by at 200mph... and when they slow down it the pit stop, the exhaust backfires, it sounds like a gunshot...

NASCAR gets a bad rap from the culture surrounding it. Everyone on the outside sees a bunch of drunk rednecks, which is partly true, but if you've never been to a race you don't know what you're missing.

I went to an IRL race at Nazareth Speedway in 2003, the 2nd-to-last IRL event there (Nazareth closed after '04). It was an awesome experience.

Although I am disappointed that NASCAR owns SPEED Channel, I still have respect for all races which involve hauling ass.

I have been to a Nascar event once in my life, I live a hr. from Dover so every year the highways are packed.

But I saw the race and it was ok but it was not as good as seeing a Indy race or even a WRC Race.

I just cannt see the point of having 40 cars with the same power packed together doing left hand turns for like 4+ hrs.

Yeah we left because we basically got the gist of the race in 45 mins. I don't think I could sit out there in the stands and watch a whole race. I see why people drive motor homes to the races though... it gives you something else to do while the event is going on.

Yeah, we had pit/infield passes. I woke up not feeling too well from St. Patty's day, so I wasn't too inclined to drink at the race though.

Last year wat the first running of the grand prix of denver sence they took it away from us like 5 years ago... and a coupple of us went... sitting 5 rows up from the track is awsome... we only got to see like a 100 foot section of track but it was all freaking cool... this year I'm thinking of getting the not so cheap tickets and sitting hopefully where I can see the first turn... that would be sweet... :)

But you dont mind an Indy race that has the leader 20 seconds ahead and the field spread out throughout the entire track? THAT makes no sense.
